Nurburgring Insurance

When discussing insurance for accidents on the Nürburgring Nordschleife, three key parties are involved:

“First party”: You, the driver.
“Second party”: The insurance company.
“Third party”: Other people involved in an incident.A crashed BMW on the Nurburgring

There are two main scenarios to consider: Touristenfahrten (public driving) and Nürburgring track days.

Touristenfahrten (Public Driving)
During Touristenfahrten, the Nürburgring Nordschleife is classified as a public road. As with any public road, you must have at least **third-party insurance** to drive. Be sure to carefully review your insurance policy for any exclusions, as some policies may not cover this type of driving. In the event of an accident involving others, insurance companies will determine liability as they would for any road incident. If you’re found liable, proper insurance coverage is essential to protect yourself financially.
Nürburgring Track Days
During private track days, the Nordschleife is considered a race track, not a public road. Most standard road insurance policies do not cover track day driving. For many track days, including those organised by DN Events, no insurance is required*. And certainly for track days organised by DN Events – participants agree not to claim against each other for damages as a condition of entry.
This means, on DN Events track days – you’re only responsible for your own (first-party) costs in the event of an accident. This significantly reducing financial risk compared to public driving days and other trackday organisers.

While third-party liability insurance isn’t required for DN Events track days, some drivers may still worry about damage to their own vehicle. Several companies offer specialised “track day insurance” to cover first-party risks. Below is a list of some (but not all) providers offering these policies.

* Some German or other European track day organisers DO require third party insurance, which is normal practice in some countries. If you are in any doubt, please contact the actual organiser directly for confirmation. Please note. These insurances are not suitable for public, or Touristenfahrten public days. It is unlikely that normal road policies will cover a private Nürburgring trackday such as DN Events Nürburgring trackday. Unless you take out a policy from a specialist insurer – you may have no insurance on this event. Motor vehicle insurance on the Nürburgring on this event IS NOT required by any law.
